Power System

This part of the project is developing a life of it's own, so it can have a page of it's own.

The electrical system on Mischief is fine and mostly installed to a high standard. It isn't suitable for offshore sailing as it only has one battery, there aren't enough breakers for all of the gadgets and lights I am fitting and as I won't have an inboard engine (alternator) it will need PV and possibly wind generation. Also, with the battery in the outboard locker there isn't room for the outboard. 

With my sailing plans in mind I have come up with the following arrangement. It is liable to change as I develop it and find cheaper ways of doing things.






Switch panel 2, modifications include adding a switch to be able to check volts on either battery, disconnecting the neutrals to reduce current draw through LEDs and making a frame to accommodate switches and sockets at rear.

Battery shelves, I have built and partially glassed in a shelf under the sink and another under the cooker. First I used my angle grinder to key the fibre-glass and remove the paint. Tape marked the area and the wooden block is the shelf support.




Then I glassed in the shelves and glued them to the bolted wooden blocks. I fitted webbing straps through slots to secure the batteries.




Battery locations are finished, only one battery is fitted. The distribution system is finished except for final details. 

The loose cables are for the AIS, VHF and other electronics.

Next is solar panels and charge controllers.

I have installed a temporary solar panel to try and keep the second battery charged. It is all a bit temporary.

Progress on the mast wiring was good. I fitted three electrical sockets for tri-colour, steaming light and anchor light. I also installed a coax connector for the mast head VHF. Not bad for the end of December.




The mastic is a bit messy but hopefully they will be water tight. I left the cables long and will cable tie them to the mast until I find the best routing around the running rigging.

Electrical system is just about finished. The pictures below show the distribution and main equipment.
